Jquery based solutions

PrettyPhoto by no-margin-for-errors.com

“prettyPhoto is a jQuery lightbox clone. Not only does it support images, it also support for videos, flash, YouTube, iframes and ajax. It’s a full blown media lightbox.”

Whats really great about this piece, is that it supports multiple media types, including the disjointed “yo.utube url’s” that other modal windows seem to have issues with.

Is a slick well thought out and executed project which many, many people are implementing in projects for their UI and UX solutions, ranging from start-up companies, to big players like Disney.
Combining this project with Jquery UI and one will have endless possibilities when working with your web development projects.

A very basic solution limited to photos and galleries but simple and works.

EasyRotator by DWUser.com

This tool works well for rolling out featured image sliders with text content over-layed, it will also give you some decent options for layout choices. Its free and has more options if you want to upgrade. What I really think makes this tool powerful is that it will optimized images for you.

Mootools solutions (no longer supported)

Bumpbox by Artviper
The strong points of this library and what make it a winner, are the broad scope of media types one can implement and use with this one, it does not discriminate. From PDF’s, videos, images, and html it’s all good in bumpbox. Easy to implement and looks good. The down side is that if you want to run it with Jquery who will have to tweak code so it plays nice with Jquery because they both use the same hooks when calling their libraries. The solution is not so bad and can be found here using the Jquery no-conflict (); funciton. Some people may slap wrists for those who use multiple libraries on a page.

Programming theory taught through clever app

Cargo-Bot created by Two Lives Left is a game centered around programming concepts strategy. It serves as a great platform for one to visually watch there code blocks run before their eyes instantly. The goal is to program the cargo-bot to solve various task, problems and perform basics operations. While the game starts off at a beginner level teaching you the ways of loops, boo-leans, and if statements, it quickly progresses into more advanced concepts leaving you hung up and mind boggled.

I installed the game out of interest for the sheer wit behind it and wanted to see what it had to offer. I was pleasantly surprised with the overall feel, from the very beginning starting off, to the point from where I left off (around level 9 I think). Generally I don’t game too much, however I ended up being glued on this app for a number of hours straight. The user interface was clean and pretty, the graphics and animation were great.

Wanting to see how others fared with this game we introduced it to a 10 year old kid we were baby sitting. He thinks he’s a pretty solid gamer and so we set him loose on it. It was not very long before he was looking up the walk through videos on YouTube. My brother on the other-hand is an fairly advanced coder and went to the point were he was amazed at how deep the game was going. Levels started requiring computer science concepts such as recursion (defined here)A programming method in which a routine calls itself. Recursion is an extremely powerful concept, but it can strain a computer's memory resources. Some programming languages, such as LISP and Prolog, are specifically designed to use recursive methods. and stacks (defined here) In programming, a special type of data structure in which items are removed in the reverse order from that in which they are added, so the most recently added item is the first one removed. This is also called last-in, first-out (LIFO). Adding an item to a stack is called pushing. Removing an item from a stack is called popping..

The game demonstrates the Codea framework the new IOS framework for apple, it was completely created on the Ipad. Looking to target developers in order for Codea to strut their stuff and make a mark.

Codea was voted most innovative App in 2011. IOS Division Winner!

Adobe CS6 Creative Cloud Service

Adobe CS6 Creative Cloud Service

Adobe-Creative-Cloud-Logo

Adobe has launched a new service which will make it much easier for those of us using Adobe products. I know that staying current on the Adobe Collections comes with a mighty tall price tag. That’s why I’m still on CS4.

I checked it out and returning users get a discount so for 29.99 a month you can have all the Adobe products not just a bundle of this and that.

You will need to download the Application Manager which will serve you your software of choice. Providing you with a ability to instantly download what you need. The other benefit to this service is you get all updates in the software included, so you never have to be 2 releases back like me.

You can start out with the standard Adobe 30 days trial to check it out in advance, which will give you enough time to play around with it before you subscribe.  Some interesting software additions worth mentioning is Muse, used as website wire framing and prototyping tool, focused more on the design process and less on the code. It will actually write the code for you and produce a working model of the site. Including Lightbox features which is kinda cool.

The service will also provide cloud storage, making collaborative efforts a snap.

In the time it took to create this post Photoshop CS6 is now installed on my system. Sweet!
